Somerset junior Eve Goldstein has defended one of her WIAA state championships.

Goldstein earned her third state gold medal by winning the Division 2 discus event at the 2019 WIAA State Track Championships at UW-La Crosse on Friday.

Goldstein will be back in action on Saturday, looking to repeat her 2018 state championship in the Division 2 event.

Goldstein won the discus championship by launching the disc 134 feet, 8 inches in her first attempt. Platteville’s Izzy Carroll took second place at 126-2. Osceola senior Katie Haase, a frequent competitor of Goldstein’s through the seasons, took sixth place with a distance of 116 feet.

Goldstein had a winning distance of 139 feet, 5 inches when she won the state discus title a year ago. Goldstein is the top seed in Saturday’s Division 2 shot put event.

Somerset had two other events compete at the state meet on Friday. Somerset junior Ty Madden competed in the Division 2 long jump event. His best distance was 20-6, which earned him 12th place.

Somerset’s girls 800 meter relay team took 16th at state. The Spartan team of Jade Atkins, Kaylee Erickson, Grace Lambert and Keely Pitcher ran a time of 1:50.28, the team’s best time of the season.
