On the first day of the Section 1AA track and field meet at Lakeville South High School, only one Red Wing athlete qualified for the state meet while a couple others just missed the state standard.

All prelims, and some finals, were run on Thursday, while the remaining finals are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Grace Johnson finished in second place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 57.40 seconds.

Cadence Thorson finished third in the long jump with a 17-02. Thorson missed the state standard of 17-07.

Likewise on the boys' side, Tom Nemanich finished third in the 3,200 (9:34.48), but missed the cut of 9:16.95 and was seven seconds behind the second-place finisher.

Red Wing sits in fourth for boys' team scores with 12 points and third for girls' with 17.5 points after the first of two days. Rosemount and Lakeville North are 1-2 in the girls' and boys' team scores.
