The Goodhue County Historical Society offers everyone an interesting opportunity to explore remnants of early Red Wing with a Back Alley Tour on Saturday, September 19, at 10 a.m.  Those alleys hold clues to a colorful story of past Red Wing events, including a series of fires in 1876 and how the Jordan Creek shaped early building of the city.  There is a small fee of $7 for members and $10 for non-members.  Meet in John Rich Park and wear comfortable shoes.  For more information, phone 651-388-6024 or email info@goodhistory.org

Remembering Shirley Reuter

I am sorry to report that Shirley Reuter died on August 28.  Readers may remember her as a neighbor who worked at the Vasa Creamery years ago.  The memorial service will be on Saturday, September 18, at Mahn Family Funeral Home in Red Wing.  Sincere sympathy goes to her family and friends.

Bloodmobile in Red Wing

Cornerstone Community Church in Red Wing will host the bloodmobile on Monday, September 13, from 1-6 p.m.  Registration is required.  Check out the Red Cross website to make an appointment and learn of other upcoming blood donation sites and dates.  The need is great, even though "vacation season" is ending with the start of school.  Thank you for doing what you can.

Church news

The worship service at Vasa Lutheran Church on September 19 will be a special intergenerational one, followed by the start of Sunday school on September 26.  Classes will be held at the Lutheran Center this year, also at 9 a.m.  Masks are recommended at worship services and Sunday school.

Confirmation classes for 7th and 8th graders will begin on September 15, from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. at the Lutheran Center.  The session will run for nine consecutive Wednesdays on the theme of "Super Heroes of the Old Testament."

To keep informed about happenings in Vasa, check out the church's website.  The office phone number is 651-258-4327; be advised that office hours are limited.  Please leave a clear message and phone number, and someone will return your call.  Email the church at any time:  office@vasalutheran.org  Reach Pastor Maureen at: pastor@vasalutheran.org  Sunday morning worship services are at 9 a.m. at the church and available on YouTube, and the Wednesday evening service is at 6:30 p.m. at the Lutheran Center.  Have coffee and conversation with neighbors on Tuesday mornings at the Lutheran Center, about 9:30.  All are welcome at these events.  Contact the church office for information about the Vasa Museum, which is open to the public free of charge on Sundays.  Donations are always needed and appreciated.

Looking ahead, Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in rural Welch will hold its 30th annual "Taste of Welch" on October 9 with some modifications.  Their bake sale will be by pre-order by September 25.  The choices are cookies, bars, breads, sweet breads, chicken noodle soup, and chili.  Pick up your items in the church parking lot on October 9.  Please remain in your vehicle.  Information about their traditional raffle and how to order bake sale items is on their website ccchurch.us and on Facebook, Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.  As we turned the page to September, here's a reminder that there are just a few more Sundays that the Vasa Museum will be open.  Appointments are available at other times by contacting any member of the museum board or the church office.

And so, Dear Readers, I hope you are healthy and safe.  Until next week, may your joys be many and your cares be few!
