Jim Bryant served on the Goodhue County Board for 16 years and was a Red Wing police officer for 26 years. Bryant started his most recent role as a Red Wing School Board member in 2018.

Bryant talked about what inspired him to join the school board, what he hopes to accomplish, things he advocates for and more.

What inspired you to join the Red Wing School Board?

I graduated from Red Wing and wanted to be involved in the decision making process for the school district that my family and I graduated from.

What do you hope to accomplish for the students and families of Red Wing?

I want all students to have a great learning experience, along with being in a safe school and at an education that we all can afford.

What is one particular topic/issue that you advocate for?

I think we have spent more money than we needed to and by doing so it would be hard to keep all the referendum promises that were made by others. We are now facing declining enrollment and this is causing a loss in revenue for our school. The administration team, with help from the school board, needs to look at ways to bring students back or improve our online learning as that seems to be the future of learning for students.

What is one thing you like most about being on the board?

This board has seven individuals that bring many passionate ideas, thoughts and suggestions. We are less than three months into working together and we are learning more about each other.

What do you find difficult about your job?

Not having in person learning was frustrating for me and many students and parents in the school district. COVID-19 caused a number of issues, with the number one problem we faced was that our school district was not prepared for online or distance learning.  We learned that we had a number of issues with distance learning from the last part of the school year in 2020. During the summer we were able to improve on it as we entered this school year.

What do you do outside of the school board?

I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and playing golf. I still work full time and I work at Great Rivers Mutual Insurance Company in Goodhue and we have a wonderful team.
