Sargent's Nursery in Red Wing

Sargent's Nursery is located at 3352 North Service Drive, Red Wing in Red Wing. Rachel Fergus / Republican Eagle

Sargent’s Nursery is growing -- plants, of course, but its footprint, too.

The longtime local business won the Construction, Home Furnishing and Home Improvement Business of the year award from the Red Wing Area Chamber of Commerce.

David Lewis, president and general manager of Sargent’s Nursery, talked about the award, the upcoming spring planting season, how they were impacted by the pandemic, their 2021 goals and more.

Did you think you’d win this award?

It is an honor to be nominated much less win the award! We are proud of the work we do within the community and honored to be recognized by our peers and fellow community members.

How did you react when you heard you won?

We have been lucky enough to be honored in the retail category in the past and to be recognized again for the work we do in the home improvement category is really special. The first thing I wanted to do was share the news with all of our employees as this honor is really about the hard work and dedication of all of our employees.

How was your business impacted by the pandemic?

The pandemic and the impacts to both our retail and landscape services business were extraordinary. Business literally stopped, then started again and once we could open safely and customers could shop we have never been busier. There is something about gardening that is soothing to the soul.

The pandemic forced more people than ever to stay home, work from home, and find their own safe haven and in so doing many people found the best place to escape was at home in their own backyard. Gardening, growing their own food, beautifying their home/landscapes and creating their own private spaces became more than a want, but truly a need as people looked to get out of the house and connect with nature.

We are so fortunate to be in a business where both our retail store and our landscape design/install/maintenance company services those needs for our customers.

What goals/hopes do you have for your business in 2021?

While restrictions are easing and there is light at the end of the tunnel for many folks, I believe the connection many people made with their home and gardens will be lasting. Our goals are the same as always, which is to provide the very best customer service and top quality plant materials for our customers and we hope to earn the trust and build relationships with a large demographic of new gardeners that will hopefully become life-long customers.

What do you want to share with the Red Wing community about your business?

The Sargent family has been proudly serving the Red Wing area for 93 years and counting. Our core values have never changed and our extended family of Sargent’s employees are all truly dedicated to serving our customers to the best of their abilities. We value each and every customer and are honored to be a part of a great business community here in Red Wing.

What are you most excited about for the upcoming spring planting season?

Spring is always the busiest and most exciting time of the season for us. Everyone can’t wait to get back in the garden again and our greenhouses will be filled with beautiful color.

We just completed the addition of another 3,000 square feet of greenhouse growing space so we can provide even more beautiful flowers and hanging baskets for our customers this spring! After a long winter the greenhouse is truly one of the best places to be and we look forward to working with each and every one of our customers.

Think spring!
